Replacing the water heater in Sheffield

Water heaters, especially older ones, can stop producing enough hot water for your home. Newer water heaters are not only more economical due to energy savings, but have larger tanks to meet the needs of your home and have been upgraded with numerous safety features. Replace your old water heater and you will immediately notice the difference.

Turn off and drain the old water heater

Switch off the power to the water heater, depending on whether it is gas or electric. This prevents injury when removing the old appliance. Turn off the gas valve going to the water heater if it is gas, or turn off the switch in the switch box if it is electric. Also shut off the water supply to the water heater so that the tank does not try to fill itself when you empty it.

Draining the water

Drain all the water from the water heater using a tap inside the house. Turn on the hot water and run it until the water becomes cold or lukewarm. You can also drain the tank by connecting a hose to the water outlet on the outside of the water heater and running it outside.

Make sure that the pilot flame is extinguished

The pilot flame, located at the base of the water heater, is the one that heats the water. It is a small fire at the bottom that can be very dangerous if it is not extinguished before moving the water heater.

Disconnecting the old water heater

After turning off the gas or electricity supplying the water heater, the next step is to disconnect the old water heater from the gas pipe or the electricity supply coming from the wall. If you have a gas water heater, loosen and unscrew the 'fitting' in the gas pipe, where the wall pipe and the water heater pipe connect. If the water heater is electric, you must remove the small electric panel from the water heater with a screwdriver. Once you have removed the panel, you should be able to see where the wall wires have been spliced with those of the water heater.

Cutting the water pipes

The cold water valve going to the water heater has already been closed, so water should no longer flow in or out of the hot and cold water pipes.

Bring in the new water heater and remove the old one

Carry the new water heater on a trolley, leaving space to remove the old one. Once the old water heater has been moved to the trolley, place the new one in its place.

Connecting the new water heater

Connect the new water heater using new pipe connectors. Use one for the hot water line and one for the cold water line. If it is a gas water heater, use a pipe of the right size to connect the gas line. If it is an electrical system, reconnect the power cables in the same way as they were removed.
