Why does my dimmer switch feel warm?

Dimmer switches are becoming increasingly popular as they allow you to control the range/intensity of light to suit your comfort and mood. With constant use, dimmer switches can feel a little warm to the touch - does that sound worrying? No, this is quite normal, but it shouldn't feel hot, and if it feels too hot, then there's a problem.

If you have this problem, read on to find out how to get to the bottom of the cause and what you can do about it.

Why is your dimmer switch hot?

Dimmer switches are different from most other light switches in your home. They are equipped with electronic components that enable dimming.

They work with semiconductors that function like transistors and control the flow of current in the lamps. This usually generates heat, which spreads across the metal plate and heats up the cover of the switch plate.

Signs that your dimmer switch is too hot

1- Your dimmer switch is overloaded

Light switches cannot handle as much current as sockets. Also, dimmer switches can handle 1500 watts at once. So with simple calculations, you can determine what you should do next. If the bulbs exceed the 1500 watt limit, your switch is probably overloaded.

A hot dimmer switch poses a high risk of fire as the heat can break down the thermoplastic coating, causing the wires to lose their insulating properties, resulting in arcing and short circuits.

2- What can you do about it?

The easiest way is to upgrade your dimmer switch, which can handle a higher wattage.

Opt for energy-saving light bulbs such as CFL and LED lamps.

Rewire the bulbs and split them into two or more groups so you have additional dimmer switches.

Your dimmer switch exceeds the recommended temperature.

If your dimmer switches exceed the above limit, it's time to call a professional electrician. Disclaimer - Electricity is not a DIY job; leave it to a professional.

3- Faulty wiring

Improper or faulty wiring is one of the main reasons why your dimmer switch can get hot. Even when properly installed, the cables can show signs of wear due to their age. These poor connections restrict the flow of electricity in the light switches, causing heat and a spark in the wiring.
