How to replace a bathroom sink

There are many reasons why you may need a new washbasin for your bathroom. Perhaps it's starting to show signs of wear and tear. Replacing a sink that is chipped, cracked or simply out of fashion can be very time consuming for a layman, but once you've familiarised yourself with the basics, it won't seem so daunting.

Measure

To replace a bathroom sink, the first thing you need to do is take the correct measurements. Firstly, measure the length, width and depth of the sink. Measure the worktop to determine the dimensions of the surface on which the sink will stand.

Buying the washbasin

Replace the sink by buying a new one from your local DIY store. Make sure you take the dimensions with you. The dimensions of the new sink should be the same or larger than the old one. If it is larger, you will need to adjust the worktop to fit the new sink.

Turn off the water

Before you replace the sink, you must switch off the water supply to the sink. You must remove the tap and drain so that no water can enter the system.

Disconnect the pipework

Dismantle the pipework of the existing washbasin. Make sure that the tap is free of water before removing it by turning it on and allowing the accumulated water to drain.

Place a bucket under the P-trap. This will catch the water in the siphon when the drain is disconnected. The drain is removed by a combination of unscrewing and removing the putty.

Remove the clips

Look under the sink to find any clips. These clips are used to secure the sink to the worktop. Remove the clips.

Remove the sealant

Use a spatula to loosen the sealant between the worktop and the edge of the sink. The sink can now be removed from its holder. Carefully lift out the old sink and put it to one side.

Apply silicone sealant

Apply silicone sealant to the sink and then insert it into the worktop. When you reinsert the sink, make sure that it sits firmly on the worktop. If any excess silicone leaks out, wipe it off with a damp cloth.

Connecting the new sink

The next step after replacing the sink is to connect the siphon and refit the tap. Remember to seal all edges so that no water leaks out.

Test the new tap

Turn on the water supply and let the water flow. Check the connections and the edges of the washbasin. There should be no leaks.
