My toilet tank has not water

There are a number of problems that can cause a toilet not to fill or flush. One such inconvenience can occur when the toilet tank does not fill or appears to empty by itself. This problem is often caused by the float or filling valve being too low in the tank. However, it can also be caused by the chain of the release lever getting stuck under the flap.

If there is suddenly no more water in the tank, it could be one of these problems.

How does a toilet work?

The water enters through the connected water pipe at the bottom of the toilet tank. The water is collected in the tank by a large rubber seal, the so-called baffle plate. When the tank fills with water, a float rod or a float bowl is forced upwards.

Reasons why there is no water in the toilet tank

Incorrect position of the float or fill valve

One of the most common problems that can cause the tank to be empty is the position of the float or fill valve.

To fix the problem, simply remove the lid of the toilet tank and locate the float. There should be an adjustment screw on the top of the float or fill valve that can be turned with a screwdriver to adjust the height of the float.

Damaged overflow pipe

There is a tall pipe inside the toilet tank with an opening at the top of the pipe. When the water level rises above the top of the pipe, the excess water runs into the overflow pipe and drains into the toilet bowl.

Ideally, the water rises to the set level and then stops filling the tank. The problem occurs if the overflow pipe is cracked or otherwise damaged, as the water in the tank can then seep into the overflow pipe and drain into the toilet bowl.

If you have experience with plumbing, you will need to purchase a compatible flush valve prior to repair. Replace the flush valve and reconnect the tank to the bowl. Make sure the flush valve gasket and all connections are properly installed before turning on the water.

Leaking toilet tank

In some cases, the toilet tank may have an active leak that prevents the tank from filling completely with water. Leaks often occur between the tank and the bowl where the flush valve seal and flush valve assembly are installed. However, if the tank is cracked, water may also leak onto the floor behind the toilet.

Close the water shut-off valve on the supply line and flush the toilet to drain the remaining water in the tank. Unscrew the toilet tank and remove it from the toilet bowl. Inspect the tank for cracks or damage that could cause a leak.

No water supply

The toilet tank may be empty if there is no water supply. This can happen if the water is turned off in the neighbourhood or in the house, but also if you close the shut-off valve on the water supply line to the toilet and forget to open it again.

If the water pressure in the whole house is low, the toilet may also fill very slowly. Check whether the shut-off valve is open. If this does not solve the problem, you should contact a plumber to solve the problem of low water pressure.
