How to repair noisy toilet cisterns
They can be particularly annoying if the toilet is close to a bedroom. The main reason for this problem is that cisterns are usually the most heavily used parts of a plumbing system.
However, a noisy toilet cistern can be repaired with simple plumbing tools and in a very short time. There can be many reasons for a noisy toilet cistern.
Dirty valve
One of the most common reasons for a noisy cistern is that dirt and debris has built up in the fill valve. A honking or whistling sound is caused by the water pressure running over this dirt and debris. Fixing this problem is quite simple. The first thing you need to do is turn off the water supply, then open the top of the valve and check for debris. If you find any dirt, remove it and replace the valve. Switch the water supply back on and check the pipe for any leaks. This should stop the noise from the cistern.
Water hammer
This can be caused by a worn valve diaphragm disc, which is relatively easy to repair. You only need to replace the washer. Always remember to switch off the water supply first. Go inside, split the ball valve and you will find a black rubber seal. Replace it with a new washer. Insert it correctly and refit the ball valve.
Defective float switch
If the water in the cistern overflows from the pipe in the centre, the problem could be a defective float switch. It may also be because the float switch is not set correctly. There are two ways to adjust this switch. Firstly, you can unscrew the float a little using the adjusting screw on top of the valve to adjust the float. If the float switch is defective, you may have to replace it completely.
Vibrations in the washer and spindle
If you notice that your toilet cistern makes a loud honking noise when flushing, the problem may be due to vibrations in the washer and spindle of the fill valve. To solve this problem, switch off the water supply again. Unscrew the upper part of the filling valve or ball valve located inside the cistern.
Remove the washer, spindle and float ball; then lever out the washer and turn it over. Press it firmly back into place and turn on the water while holding your hand over the open ball valve. This will flush out any dirt that may have accumulated inside. Then reassemble the system and carry out a test flush.
