How to repair a leaking bathroom sink

 Understanding leaking bathroom sinks

Before we get our hands wet, let's understand the possible causes of a leaking bathroom sink. A bathroom sink can leak due to problems in three main areas: the tap, the drain pipe and the sink.

Leaking taps are often due to worn components. Whether it's O-rings, valve seats, washers or the cartridge, time, use and hard water can wear down these parts and lead to leaks.

Leaks in drain pipes are usually caused by loose connections or cracks in the pipe. Over time, the joints between different sections of your pipe can loosen or the pipe itself can crack, causing water to leak out.

Leaks in sinks are usually due to a poor seal around the drain. The putty or sealant that holds the drain in place can break down over time, allowing water to leak out.

How to recognize the type of leak

The first step to fixing a leak is to recognize the type of leak. Here's how to recognize them:

Tap leaks: Look for continuous dripping, even when the tap is turned off. Water may also be leaking from the base of the tap when it is turned on.

Leaking drain pipes: Puddles of water in the cupboard under the sink are a clear sign. Wet stains or discolouration on the pipe can also indicate a leak.

Leaks in the sink: Look for water leaking directly under the sink. This type of leak often results in water pooling on the floor under the sink.

Step-by-step guide to fixing different types of leaks

Leaks from the tap

Switch off the water supply: Always start by turning off the water supply valves under the sink.

Remove the tap handle: Remove the decorative cap from the tap handle and unscrew the handle anti-clockwise using a suitable tool.

Remove the stem: Once the handle is removed, you should see a nut holding the stem in place. Turn this nut anti-clockwise with the spanner to loosen the stem.

Reassemble the tap: Reattach the stem and handle by reversing the disassembly steps. Switch on the water supply and check whether the tap is still leaking.

Repairing leaking drain pipes

Localize the leak: First find the exact location of the leak. Dry the pipe with a towel and then run water through the sink. Look for fresh drops of water to find the source of the leak.

Tighten the connections: If the leak is at a joint, try tightening the slip nuts with a pipe wrench. Tighten them in a clockwise direction. Do not overtighten as this could damage the nuts or threads.

Check whether the situation has improved: Run water through the sink again to check if the leak persists.

Replace the pipe: If the pipe is still leaking, it may be cracked or too worn to seal properly. In this case, you will need to replace the pipe. Replacement is usually as simple as unscrewing the old pipe and screwing in the new one.
