What's wrong with your toilet when you hear water running in your tank

If you hear water running in the tank after filling the toilet, it's a symptom of a costly problem. It means that water is leaking from the tank, which will drive up your water bill. To fix the problem, all you have to do is invest a little time and maybe buy a new part.

Baffle plate

The flapper is the large rubber or soft plastic valve located at the bottom of the tank. When the flapper is closed, it prevents water from flowing out of the tank into the bowl. When you flush the toilet, the flap opens and lets water run into the bowl. Over time, the material hardens and the flap loses its flexibility. If the water is hard, the flapper may also be encrusted with a film of minerals. Replace an aged or damaged flapper with one made for your toilet model or fit a universal valve. Most flaps come off the ears that attach them to the overflow pipe.

Chain

Check the chain that connects the flapper to the handle you use to flush the toilet. If there is too much slack in the chain, it can get jammed or tangled. If it has too little slack, the flapper may not sit properly on the hole it closes. Adjust the chain by removing the clip that attaches it to the flush handle, then lengthen or shorten the chain. Check the fit by flushing the toilet and seeing if water runs past the flapper.

Float

Some toilets use a float to determine the water level in the tank. Older models usually use a large ball-shaped float on the end of a metal rod. Other models use a float that runs along a tube connected to the fill valve. Bending the metal rod on the float adjusts how high the water level rises in the tank before the fill valve closes. The clip that attaches the latter float to a metal rod can be adjusted in the same way. The water level in the tank should be about one inch below the top of the overflow pipe.

Filler valve

The seals inside an outdated filler valve may have become brittle, or the part may simply have worn out. These problems cause water to enter the tank through the filler valve. If replacing the flapper, chain and adjusting the float have not solved the problem, the leaking filler valve may need to be replaced. For replacement, close the water shut-off valve and disconnect the water supply line to the toilet.
