Ways to remove a clogged drain pipe

A clogged drain line is something to be reckoned with because it happens all the time. Some of the most common causes of clogs include grease buildup and debris. Hair, solid objects, food, and many other types of debris can clog the drain. However, there are some ways to clear the clogged drain, and here they are.

Using the plunger

The plunger is a tried and true method that has been used for years. This tool is the first aid for any type of clog. It uses compressed air or water to push on whatever is clogging the drain. The plunger works best for clogged toilet bowls and other drains where the rubber head can fit.

Use a plumber's snake or cable drill

Use this flexible steel cable to remove debris from the drain. Simply take the tool by the hook and pull it out, which will clog the drain line. This process also requires some elbow grease. Simply insert the tool into the drain pipe and use it to find the clog. If there is resistance, it means it has hit something. Turn the handle of the tool and pull out the clog. This method usually works for solid clogs. However, it does not work for grease clogs.

Pour out hot water

When grease clogs the drain line, the best method is to treat the clogged drain line with hot water. Hot water loosens the grease and allows it to drain into the sewer. Simply bring a pot of hot water to a boil and pour it down the drain. Repeat the process until the grease is removed.

Use natural drain cleaners

Baking soda and vinegar are a good combination for cleaning drains. First, pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain and then add half a cup of vinegar. The mixture will dissolve any grease, hair or other clotting matter in the drain. Repeat the process until the clotting materials are removed. To increase the effectiveness of the combination, pour a few cups of hot water down the drain to flush out the remaining grease and dissolved debris. Just make sure that you do not use this combination together with commercial drain cleaners, as this may cause undesirable reactions.

Use commercial drain cleaners

Keep in mind that commercial drain cleaners contain toxic and caustic chemicals. However, if natural drain cleaners don't work, it's time to use commercial drain cleaners as a last resort. Drain cleaners typically contain hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and other strong acids that dissolve hair, grease and other solid clogs. A clogged drain line can be easily cleared with such chemicals, but be careful when handling these products. Use rubber gloves if possible, as the product can cause an allergic reaction if it comes in contact with the skin.
