Setting a toilet float

For a perfect flush, you need a functioning toilet float. A toilet float is a small device that ensures that the toilet bowl fills with water without overflowing. This small device, sometimes called a ball valve, can become misaligned from time to time, leaving you in a predicament. If you are not getting the right amount of water into your toilet bowl (too much or too little) or the toilet sounds like it is constantly running, check your toilet float.

It may be that the float needs to be adjusted. It is relatively easy to know how to adjust the float. Before you call a plumber or flood your bathroom, check your toilet float and see if you can adjust it yourself.

Remove the tank lid

First, remove the toilet tank lid, which is the large cap that sits on the back of the toilet. Next you need to identify the float in the tank. Every toilet looks a little different, but usually the floats are easy to identify. Your toilet float should look like a ball floating on the water in the tank. If you have a newer model of toilet, the float will look like a plastic collar attached to a pole.

Before you whip out your tool belt and become a plumber, we recommend turning off the toilet's water supply as a precaution.

Adjusting the valve screw

If your toilet is an older model, the arm that attaches to the water valve is probably fixed with a screw. If you want to adjust the float, you have to loosen the screw. You can loosen this screw with a screwdriver or a spanner to put the float in the right position. You need to adjust the float higher or lower to change the water level in the bowl.

Bend the float arm

If your toilet does not have a screw, carefully bend the arm downwards to increase the amount of water in the tank and upwards to decrease the amount of water. You only need to apply slight pressure. If you apply too much pressure, the arm may break or be damaged, and then you will have a flood on your hands.

If you have a newer model of toilet, you are in luck. Adjusting the toilet float is quite easy. All you have to do is squeeze the spring clip on the float ring.

Check

After adjusting your toilet's float, flush the toilet and check if your problem is solved. If you still have problems, put on another pair of gloves and start adjusting again. It may take a few tries before you find the right setting.
