Resetting a circuit breaker

Switch off the fixtures

The first thing you need to do is switch off all lighting fixtures and unplug any appliances that may have caused the problem. Then equip yourself with a torch to make sure you have enough light when working on the circuit breaker.

Locate the electrical panel

Locate the electrical panel, which should be where the electricity comes into your house (e.g. in the entrance, garage or basement). The panel has either a lock with a key or a plastic latch that needs to be opened. If you examine the circuit breaker, you will notice that the switches have three positions: ON (in the centre of the panel), OFF (at the edge of the panel) and a middle position. If the breaker is in the middle position, it has tripped and needs to be reset.

Press the switch

Slide the switch to the OFF position and then back to the ON position, towards the centre of the control panel. You will hear a click. If the switch remains in this position, you have successfully reset the circuit breaker and power is restored. As a precaution (in case sparks are emitted from the control panel), it is advisable to wear protective goggles and stay to the side of the control panel. Also make sure your hands are dry and you are standing on a dry surface.

Determine the cause of the problem

After you reset the circuit breaker, there are several steps you can take to determine the cause of the problem. Switch on all permanently installed lamps. If the breaker does not trip, the problem is probably caused by an appliance you have plugged into an outlet. Carefully plug in one appliance at a time and if the breaker trips again, it means that the appliance in question is either causing a short circuit or overloading the circuit. Reset the circuit breaker and do not reconnect the unit until the problem is resolved.

Another possible explanation for the tripping could be that the circuit is overloaded. This means that you have connected too many appliances. Try switching off some of the high-consumption appliances such as heaters or air conditioners to reduce the load, or move them to another circuit. A short circuit can also cause the circuit breaker to trip. To determine if it is a short circuit, inspect the cables for signs of melting. Check if the plugs and sockets smell burnt or look blackened.
