Replacing a dryer socket

Dryers require a special dryer socket to function properly. This outlet is designed to provide both 240 volt and 110 volt power to the dryer. The dryer needs the 240 volt supply to heat up, while the 110 volt supply is used to control the timers in the dryer.

Over time, sockets can become damaged or simply stop working, for a variety of reasons. There is no point in trying to repair these sockets as they are very cheap to replace for safety reasons.

Switch off the power

Before you start working on your home's electrics, make sure you switch off the power. If the power is left on, this work can be very dangerous. Either turn off the circuit breaker for that circuit or, if you are not sure which circuit breaker to remove, turn off all the power in your home.

Remove the old socket

The old socket must now be removed from the wall by unscrewing the two screws that hold the faceplate. Once these screws are removed, it should be possible to pull the socket out of the electrical box. Be careful, however, as the socket is still connected to the cables in the wall. Keep the screws in a safe place so that you can use them again later.

Removing the clamps

The screws of the clamps can be loosened with a screwdriver. Once the clamps are loosened, the entire socket should come off the wall quite easily.

Wire the socket

If you have enough wire available, cut off the old bare wires so you can work with a new piece of wire. Using wire strippers, remove about 1.85 cm from each wire.

The earth wire should be connected to the green screw and the white neutral wire to the terminal. The red and black wires should be connected to the other terminals, but it does not matter which way they go.

Replace the socket

You can now complete the installation by pressing the socket against the box, carefully placing all the wires inside and screwing it back in place. The dryer can now be plugged back in and the circuit breaker switched on again for the first test.
