Replacing the drain pipes of the kitchen sink

Remove existing pipes and drain

Before you start cutting and removing the pipes, you should place a bucket under the drain of your sink. You should also let all the household members know that you are removing the drain pipes, or you should turn off the water so that no one floods the area. To begin the work, you will need to remove the existing drain pipes. To do this, cut the pipe below the trap. Once this connection is cut, you can unscrew the drain pipes from the bottom of the sink and remove all the piping. If you cut the bottom pipe, water will likely leak into the bucket.

Clean and prepare the surfaces

Use light sandpaper to remove any splinters or pieces of plastic left behind from the cutting process. The surface of the existing pipe must be smooth and free of debris in order to perform the bonding process. Also remove any tape from the threads under the sink. In most cases, you can use a rag with light soap to clean the connection areas and remove any contaminants.

Inspect and assemble your drain kit

Most drain kits include easy-to-follow instructions for completion. A basic kit includes two screw pieces that attach to the underside of the sink, an S-shaped piece that consists of one to three pieces, and the gasket and screw tensioner that attach to the drain pipe. To make sure you cut the drain pipe to the right size, you should install the top part of the drain first. Be sure to wrap each screw connection with tape before attaching the drain pieces to the underside of the sink. Once you have assembled the trap and attached the two pipes to the underside of the sink, you can measure the distance between the bottom of the trap and the existing pipe.

Cut and fix the last piece

First, measure the distance from the bottom of the trap fitting to the top of the existing drain pipe. Then subtract half an inch from that length. This is the space that the connector will cover when you connect the new drain pipe to the existing drain pipe. Now apply the pipe cleaner to the outside of the new drain pipe and the inside of the connector. Allow the cleaner to dry and apply the plumber's adhesive to the same surfaces.
