Repair of the backflow valve on a sprinkler

A backflow preventer is typically located between your home's main water supply and your sprinkler system to prevent backflow of water. This special valve ensures that your drinking water is not contaminated by impurities or chemicals from your yard area. However, backflow preventers fail over time due to daily wear and pressure - water leaks often occur between the connection point of the cover and the valve body. Repairing your backflow valve involves basic replacement parts so you don't have unnecessary leaks that significantly reduce your water pressure.

Turn off your main water supply

Locate the ball valve lever on the base of the backflow preventer. Turn the lever by hand until it is perpendicular to the valve body. This lever prevents residual water in the connected piping from flowing through the valve during repair.

Remove the nut on the bell cover using a small wrench. Be careful not to strip the nut when turning the wrench. If the water leakage is prolonged, the nut may be held in place by rust.

Slide the bell cover off the valve body

Remove the hood and valve plug from inside the valve. These parts may be broken inside the valve body if you have had a constant water leak.

Inspect the inside of the valve housing for loose parts. All parts must be removed from inside before new components can be installed.

Slide a valve plug into the valve. Place a valve bonnet on the valve plug.

Slide the bell cover back onto the valve. Make sure it is flush with the top of the valve. Make sure the valve bonnet and poppet are properly aligned if the bell cover is crooked before tightening it.

Place the nut on the bell cover. Hand tighten the nut to the valve. Do not use a wrench to tighten. A hand tool may damage the nut or threads.

Turn the base lever of the valve by hand so that it is parallel to the connected pipe.

Turn on the main water supply

Activate your sprinkler system. Observe the backflow preventer. No water should leak from the connection points.
