Loud howling when the toilet tank fills up again

A howling noise when filling the toilet tank may be due to something simple, such as a partially closed valve. However, often the problem is that one or more parts of the ball valve need to be cleaned or replaced. To determine the cause of the howling, you must first make the simplest repairs before replacing the entire assembly.

Toilet tank assemblies

Inside your toilet tank are two assemblies: the ball valve and the flush valve. The ball valve controls the water fill in the tank, and the flush valve controls the flow of water from the tank to the bowl. When you flush the toilet, the lever or arm lifts the chain or wire attached to the flapper. When the flap lifts, the water is directed through the valve seat into the basin. Once the tank is empty, the plug falls back over the opening in the tank and the float ball releases the ball valve, allowing new water to flow through the tank filling pipe. Blockage or damage to the ball valve will obstruct the flow of water and cause a loud filling noise.

Restricted water flow

A howling noise when filling the tank is often caused by restricted water flow to the refill valve. Check that your main shut-off valve connected to the toilet is fully open. If it is partially closed, the tank may not be supplied with enough water. If the valve is open, check the washers on the ball valve. If they are damaged or covered with limescale, the water flow will be obstructed when filling the tank. If this is not the case, troubleshooting is required to determine the cause.

Troubleshooting the ball valve assembly

If the toilet bowl drains slowly or stops suddenly when flushing, there may be a blockage in the toilet or refill line. Remove the tank lid and check the ball float mechanism while flushing the toilet. If the float ball is cracked, replace it with a new one. Also replace damaged washers on the ball valve assembly. If the whining continues, you have several options. Oil the release lever that operates the refill valve. If this does not stop the noise, disassemble the ball valve assembly and clean all parts. Then reassemble it and check again for noise. If noise still occurs when filling the tank, the entire ball valve may be damaged. A damaged ball valve cannot normally be repaired.
