Electricians refer to electrical outlets as outlets or receptacles, and installing an outlet in drywall requires installing an electrical box. In new construction, you nail a flush-mounted outlet to a wall stud and cut a hole in the drywall before hanging it. One is to cut a large hole, nail the box to the stud and make repairs.

New construction

Use a pencil to mark the spot where you want to put the electrical junction box on a wall stud. If you are not installing an outlet in the countertop, the distance to the floor should not exceed 13.75 cm.

The face of the can should extend 1.25 cm beyond the edge of the stud so that it is flush with the surface of the drywall. Some cans have markings to indicate proper alignment of the can with the edge of the stud.

Make sure the circuit supplying the outlet is turned off. Then insert the wires into the receptacle through the openings on the side or back. Then pull out enough slack to make the connections. If the can is metal, secure the wires with screw terminals. Plastic cans are self-clamping.

Measure the exact location of the can in relation to the floor and the edge of the drywall panel above it. Transfer the measurements to the drywall board. Then draw a rectangle the size of the can on the face of the board.

Insert the can through the fitting when you hang the drywall, and drive at least one screw into the stud next to the can. Connect the outlet after you have taped and finished the drywall.

Adding an electrical outlet to existing drywall

Using a stud finder, locate a suitable stud and mark the position of the new outlet next to the stud to install a flush-mount receptacle. If you use a flush-mount receptacle, you can place it anywhere in the wall except in front of a stud.

Use a drywall saw to cut a hole in the drywall large enough to nail a recessed outlet to the stud. Repairing the drywall is easier if you cut out a rectangle about 30 cm high that extends back to the next stud. Expose half of both stud faces with a utility knife. Attach the flush-mount box to the stud, making sure the front extends 1.25 cm beyond the edge of the stud, and pull the wires through the back.

Mark the location of the box on the face of the new drywall. Then use a drywall saw to cut a hole for it. Attach the new drywall to the studs on either side of the box with screws or nails and tape, and close it off.
