How to repair a tap

Waterfall taps are becoming increasingly common in homes. All types of taps have a similar design where the spout leads to a round or elongated disc-shaped structure. This directs the water flowing from the spout along the disc, from which it drips down like a waterfall.

The spouts are modified to control the water flow more precisely and distribute the water evenly to both sides of the washbasin. Waterfall taps are used in bathroom and kitchen sinks. They are durable plumbing designs. However, with careless handling and prolonged use, they can develop problems such as leaks. Waterfall taps can be easily repaired with some basic tools and the following guidelines.

Dismantle the tap handle

Turn off the water supply to the sink. The main water valves are usually located under the sink. If you cannot find them, turn off the water supply to the house. Unlike conventional taps, waterfall taps do not usually have a large cap on the handle. The handle cover is in the shape of a thin plate, which is a bit of a hassle to move. Use a small knife to prise the cover plate open.

To access the internal components of the fitting, you will need to unscrew the handle attachment. Locate the screws that secure the handle. The handles of taps are often secured with sturdy fittings such as an Allen nut. This can be easily loosened with a spanner. However, if the handle is secured with standard nuts, you will need to loosen them with a screwdriver.

Loosen the tap stem, the O-ring and the seat seals

In waterfall taps, most of the vulnerable parts are in the stem of the tap. Replacing the stem is the safest way to repair the tap. Use a spanner to loosen the packing nut that secures the faucet stem. Pull out the stem by repeatedly tapping on the body of the tap, but do not use hard objects to do so. The fit of the stem cartridge depends on the seat washers, which have a disc-like shape with a large hole in the centre.

The washers also loosen with repeated use. Use the tip of the screwdriver to remove the old washers. The shaft gives way to the body of the fitting underneath, which contains the O-ring. If this component is damaged, it is one of the most common causes of leaking taps. Deciphering the damage to an O-ring is somewhat difficult, meaning it is better to replace it.

Sourcing spare parts for waterfall taps

It is better if you take the old faucet stem cartridge to a hardware store. This will make it easier to procure an exact match. Also buy some matching washers and an O-ring.

Replacing waterfall tap parts

Start replacing in reverse order and replace the O-ring first. You don't need any tools to do this - just force it into its original place. Continue with the insertion of the water tap and insert the seat washers.
