How to repair a leaky drain pipe of the kitchen sink

The kitchen is a frequently used space, which makes it a candidate for repairs when a sink drain pipe is clogged. The sink drain will be caught with various materials and components from cooking and washing activities that would trigger the eventual clogging of the pipes.

The normal problem of clogging is easily solved unless a serious object has caused it, in which case the help of a plumber would be required to fix the problem. The kitchen sink drain consists of a few components such as the strainer, rubber gasket, metal washer, and a large lock nut that may need to be disassembled if the clog is severe.

Initial inspection to detect leaks and blockages

Set up a bucket to catch water leaking from the drain pipes. Thoroughly examine the drain basket, a type of filter that attaches to the sink opening, to determine if the drain is clogged to allow water to pass through. The cause of leaks is difficult to determine.

The test to determine if there are leaks at the seal is to run water that forms the shape of the pipe and flows thoroughly through the pipe. Another way to first check for leaks and clogs is to make sure the connections are properly attached.

Inspect the seals and pipes

Inspect the kitchen sink's pipes and gaskets to determine if the connections are tight. Also, check the washer to see if it is damaged. Use a wrench to loosen the drain pipe from the drain basket and remove the plug and washer. If the parts have loosened, they can be removed by hand.

Cracks on the seals and pipes can now be checked. If you find cracks, you may need to replace some parts. If these parts are in good condition, check the parts under the sink.

Checking the individual parts of the drain basket

To check the components, you should remove the drain. Remove the strainer that is part of the sink with pliers. Remove the drain basket and apply sealant under it. Use a caulk gun to apply sealant to the top of the sink as well. Smooth out the applied sealant. Allow it to dry for some time.

Reassemble the parts

Reassemble the parts of the drain basket. Apply sealant to securely fasten the attached parts. All bolts and washers that are part of the connections should also be tightened.

Sealant

Allow the applied sealant to dry for two to three days to ensure that the connections are secure. Recheck for leaks by turning on the water. If leaks are still found, apply more sealant as needed.
