How to repair a crack in a siphon of the drain

It's relatively easy to fix a leaky sink trap without having to call in a plumber, which would also prove to be extremely costly. If you notice that water is gradually dripping onto the floor, then water is clearly leaking through a crack in the sink's trap. There could be two reasons why the water is dripping onto the floor: first, the connections between the traps could be loose, and second, the pipes could be cracked or clogged with debris, causing water to leak out. With some basic plumbing knowledge and a few plumbing tools, this task can easily be done yourself at home. This task should only take a few hours of your time.

Turn off the water supply

The first step is to shut off the water supply completely before trying to find the exact cause of the leak. To do this, simply turn off the shut-off valves that are located near the sink. This step is useful if you don't want the floor to be full of water.

Check the connections of the trap

The next step is to find out what exactly is causing the leak. For your own safety, put on a pair of rubber gloves and safety glasses before proceeding to the next step. Also, place a small bowl or bucket under the sink drain in case water leaks out when you open the drain. Use a wrench to check the nuts or bolts of the trap. There could be a crack between the two pipes if the nuts are not tight. Repair the crack by tightening the nuts with the wrench. Also, use a piece of tape to ensure that the two pipes are tightly connected and will not come loose. Rubber washers placed around the pipe joints can also be replaced. However, if you still see a crack in the trap, you should move on to the next step.

Check the condition of the sink drain and replace it if necessary

If even tightening the screws doesn't help repair the crack, the next step is to check the condition of the pipes and the trap. Rust could be the cause of the deteriorating condition of the drain. A new trap for the sink drain can be easily purchased at a hardware store and installed in place of the old one. With the above steps, the crack in the sink drain siphon should definitely be eliminated and no more water should drip from the drain onto the floor.
