Faucet handle replacement

When it comes to faucet handle replacement, it's not a particularly difficult task. The handle itself is only a small part of the faucet that you will be dealing with. You will find that faucet repair of any kind is usually a simple and straightforward task.

Prepare

The first thing you need to do is get under the sink to your cabinet. Clear out everything that is under your sink so that you have more space to work with. If you have a pedestal sink, you won't have to worry about this.

Turn off the water

Once you've cleaned out the contents under your sink, you can turn off the water. The hot and cold water supplies are located under the sink. They are much easier to find and reach if there isn't too much clutter in the way. However, if you can't find them, just turn off the main water source.

Drain

Get out your drain basin and place it under your faucet. Make sure it's below the plumbing so it can catch all the water. If you have a pedestal sink, use a thick towel.

Mounting nuts

Go behind the faucet and find the 2 nuts that hold the faucet in place. Use a wrench to loosen them, then remove them from the stem by hand. If you have a pop-up stopper, you should remove that as well. Using a pair of pliers, turn the retaining nut in the drain pipe counterclockwise. Then you need to release the clip on the handle of the stopper.

Removing the faucet

Take out your faucet. It is advisable to take the faucet with you to the store if you want to replace it so you can get the correct measurements. If you don't want to do this, just have them measure the distance between the holes of the faucet in your sink.

Install the faucet

You will need to coat the groove under the chrome frame of your new faucet with plumber's putty. Then, insert the faucet into your sink and replace the stem nuts. Tighten the nuts, fully if you don't have a drain plug. In that case, leave the nuts loose enough to reattach the plug.

Finish

Wrap the connections with plumbing thread seals. Attach the hot and cold water lines to the right part of the faucet. Remove the excess putty from the faucet and allow it to dry.
