Turn off power and water

The first step in installing a water heater drain pan is to turn off the power to the water heater. If it is gas powered, make sure you turn off the gas supply as well. Turn off the water supply to the water heater. To do this, locate the water line and turn it off.

Remove other attachments

Before you can remove the water heater drain pan, you must remove the pipes attached to the water heater.

Draining accumulated water

You will need to drain any hot water that may have accumulated in the water heater. This water could be hot, so be careful when draining it. You can drain the water by connecting a garden hose or other pipe to the water heater's drain valve. The hot water will start flowing through the hose as soon as you open the valve.

Lifting the water heater

Get help lifting the water heater. Lift the heater after all the water has been drained.

Put the pan in place

While lifting the water heater, simultaneously place the drip pan under the water heater. Use extreme caution when doing this and make sure the heater is securely lifted.

Replacing the water heater

After placing the water heater drip pan, carefully place the lifted heater back on the drip pan.

Locate the PVC

Look at the side of the water drain pan to locate the PVC connections. This slot is for attaching other fittings and pipes that drain water collected in the pan.

Fasten

Use good quality PVC glue to bond the fittings such as elbows and couplings. Make sure that the placement of the fittings facilitates the drainage of water to the outside.

Strap

A PVC strap will hold the pipe in place, so be sure to secure it. Add an elbow to the end of the pipe so that the water drains toward the ground.

Reattach

Reconnect all removed pipes to the water heater. Turn on the water and gas supply.
