How to install a seal for the toilet tank

A tapered toilet tank gasket provides a watertight seal between the toilet tank and the toilet bowl, allowing water to flow quickly when the toilet is flushed. When the toilet tank seal breaks, leaks occur at the bottom around the bowl and the tank bolts. You can take care of this job yourself with the following tips and tools.

Close the water supply to the toilet and drain the tank

Turn off the toilet's water shut-off valve, which is installed in the wall near the floor behind the toilet. Flush the toilet to empty it. Adjust the adjustable crescent wrench to fit the water supply line and remove it from the toilet tank. Place large towels on the floor behind the toilet bowl to catch water splashes.

Remove the tank cap and dry the tank

Carefully lift off the tank lid and place it on a quilt or blanket far away from your work area. Use sponges and more towels to completely dry the bottom and walls of the tank.

Loosen and remove the tank bolts

Using the large flathead screwdriver, try turning the tank bolts counterclockwise to loosen and remove them. If they are rusted tight, apply rust solvent and let it sit for six to eight hours to remove rust and corrosion. Unscrew them with the screwdriver and loosen the nuts with the wrench.

Remove the toilet tank and the seal

Place the tank upside down on towels or blankets, away from the toilet bowl. Carefully remove the old gasket and rubber fragments. Wipe out the tank hole with rubbing alcohol to remove all the old rubber pieces.

Insert the new gasket and bolts

Place the new toilet tank gasket in the hole with the tapered end facing out. Lay the toilet tank flat to insert the bolts from the inside. Place a rubber washer on each bolt just below the head and insert the bolts into the holes. Place a second rubber washer on each bolt where it exits the tank. Then tighten the nut on the bolt. The third rubber washer goes under the nut, and there is a metal washer underneath.

Reattaching the toilet tank

Carefully lift the toilet tank and align it so that the gasket fits into the hole on the back of the toilet bowl and the bolts fit into the toilet bowl. Carefully move and wiggle the tank to make sure everything fits perfectly. Tighten the screws slowly and alternately to make sure they are seated properly and evenly. Replace the toilet bowl lid onto the tank.

Restoring the water supply

Reconnect the water supply, turn on the faucet, and check for leaks in the tank or bowl for 48 hours.
