How to get the gurgle when flushing the toilet from the sink

The gurgling sound you hear from the sink when you flush the toilet may sound harmless, but it can lead to problems if you don't stop it. It means that the pipes are not properly vented, which can lead to slow water flow and eventually clogs. The gurgling occurs when air flows through the sink's trap. When there is enough air to drain the siphon, there is no longer a barrier between you and the foul, methane-laden fumes. Cleaning the vents can be as simple as plunging the toilet, but if the problem persists, you may need to repair some pipes.

Close the sink drain, cover the overflow pipes with tape, and submerge the toilet. A partial blockage in the toilet drain pipe can force air through the sink drain, and submerging the toilet can clear the blockage. If you cover the sink drain, the force of the plunger will stay in the pipes.

Listen for the gurgling sound. If it is still there, try again. Keep doing the plunge until you are sure it has no effect.

Get up on the roof and check the main vent opening. It may be clogged with leaves or debris, or if it has a screen, the screen is dirty. Remove the debris and clean the screen.

Use a garden hose to spray water into the vent pipe. If there is a blockage deep in the pipes, the water can loosen it. If water is backing up out of the vent, it is a clear sign of a clog.

Insert the drill bit into the vent hole and unwind it until you feel resistance, then crank the crank to push the head through the obstruction. When you think you have cleared the clog, spray more water into the vent and make sure it does not come back out.

Look under the sink if the gurgling persists. You may see an air supply valve - also known as a cheat - connected to the horizontal arm of the trap. Unscrew it with adjustable pliers and replace it with a new one. It's an inexpensive part that a plumber installed to compensate for inadequate venting at this sink, and it's probably broken.

Tip

Call a plumber if you can't stop the gurgling. The current venting is inadequate, and you may need new pipes. Also, you may have an illegal and ineffective drain.

Warning

Gases that can enter your home when you drain the trap include methane and hydrogen sulfide. Methane is explosive and can cause suffocation if present in large enough quantities, and hydrogen sulfide can cause sinusitis.
