You might not think of a water heater as one of the machines in your home that needs regular maintenance, but it is. The water heater has many moving parts and because it is often tucked away in a small space, it can be difficult to know when something is wrong. It’s important to have your water heater serviced regularly so that you know if you need new parts or repairs.

In some cases, a new installation is needed if there's no electric supply close by that can sufficiently power the unit.

A water heater is a device that stores hot water to provide homes and businesses with both hot water and warm temperatures. The most common type of water heater, the electric tankless heater, stores heated water in a metal tank through an electric heating element.

There are few ways that you can maintain a tankless water heater at home, including:

- Change the filter every six months or so. Filters are usually located on top or bottom of the tankless heaters depending on their design. Filters need to be cleaned on a weekly basis at least and changed monthly or as soon as they start to clog up with dirt or mineral deposits from the water supply line.

- Check for any leaks and make sure no faucets are left open if you have any leak problems.

- Replace anodes once in a while if you live in an area where salt is used for treating drinking water. You can recognize this by a “salt-like” odor.

- If the water around your home has a bad taste or smell, you may need to install an RO or distillation system. What are some things I should not do with my water?

Do not boil the water, because boiling can release hydrogen gas into the air and cause it to explode.

Do not use soap when washing dishes, as this will increase the amount of soap in your drinking water.
