Installation of a new faucet

Sometimes the most difficult part of installing a new faucet is removing the old faucet. Mineral deposits build up around old faucets and make it difficult to remove the faucet from the sink base. Be prepared to struggle with your old faucet if it's been there for a while, especially if you have hard water.

TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION

The most important detail to consider when choosing a new faucet is the type of faucet that will fit your sink or vanity. Do you want to install the faucet in your sink or vanity? How many holes does the faucet have? What is the spacing between the holes? The most common hole pattern for a bathroom faucet is 10 cm, but it can also be a single hole or a hole spacing of 20 cm or more (also known as wide spacing). It is helpful to take a photo of your old faucet to help select a new one, or take the old faucet to the store. The length and height of the spout are critical because they affect how the water falls into the sink. The depth of the basin also affects how the water falls into the basin. The higher the spout and the shallower the basin, the more the water will splash out of the sink.

Typically, bathroom faucets are sold with a new drain valve and drain body. However, if your faucet is in good condition and has the same design as the new faucet, you can leave it as is. When you replace your faucet, you should also purchase a new end piece and trap. Make sure you buy the right size - take the old pipe with you to make sure the pipe diameter, length and overall design and length are correct. This installation uses PVC or ABS drain pipe and traps with compression fittings. Working under a sink can confuse your sense of "left loose, right tight". Be sure to unscrew the old parts in the correct direction. Always read the manufacturer's installation instructions and safety precautions with any faucet.

HOW TO REMOVE THE OLD FAUCET

  • Clear everything from under the sink to keep the work area free of clutter.
  • Place a flashlight under the faucet and place a pillow or kneeling pad underneath to work comfortably.
  • Turn off the water at the shutoff valves.
  • Turn on the water at the faucet to relieve the pressure.
  • Unscrew the water supply line from the faucet and shutoff valves.

REPLACING THE OLD WATER FAUCET AND DRAIN

  • Unscrew the retaining nut and pull the swivel ball/rod out of the faucet.
  • Unscrew the trap and remove it. (Make sure there is dirty water in the siphon - have a bucket ready to drain it). Plug the drain pipe coming out of the wall with a rag.
  • Spray the locknut that secures the rubber gasket to the sink with penetrating oil. Spray the drain flange as well.
  • Unscrew the lock nut.

INSTALLING THE NEW FAUCET

  • Read the instructions and safety information for your faucet. Familiarize yourself with the parts of the faucet.
  • Using a scouring pad, clean your sink or vanity of any residue that may have come from the old faucet.
  • Assemble the faucet as described in the instructions.
