How does a leaky faucet happen?
Leaky pipes come in many different shapes and sizes, with faucet leaks being the most common. If your faucet is slowly dripping day after day, it can lead to a major plumbing nightmare that you can avoid altogether.
Damaged and worn parts
Does your faucet drip so incessantly that you want to rip the fixture out of the sink? If so, everything points to the fact that the washer in the faucet needs to be replaced. However, if you have a compression faucet, the washers can sometimes be damaged as they constantly hold back water pressure when the faucet is closed. Faucets with cartridges may also need to have the cartridge itself or the moving parts (O-rings, inlet and outlet seals) replaced.
High water pressure
Does your faucet leak at certain times of the day, such as at night or when no other faucet is in use? This could mean that your water pressure is too high and is becoming a problem when no other faucets or fixtures are being used in your home (or neighborhood). Small leaks can start at your faucet and eventually lead to pinpoint leaks in your plumbing that get worse over time. Consider calling a plumber to check your water pressure and bring it back to an appropriate level.
Cracks in the pipes
If a pipe is cracked or a fitting is loose, water will leak from that location and from the faucet closest to the leak. If you notice that your faucet is leaking slowly but steadily, examine the piping under the sink. Check to see if there are any small cracks, holes or loose fittings where the pipes connect. The leak could also be behind the walls. So if in doubt, have a professional plumber check your pipes.
Why should you care about leaky faucets in the first place?
Homeowners often underestimate the impact of a single leaky faucet in the home. Aside from the possibility that a leaky faucet indicates another plumbing problem, a single leaky faucet can account for 1/10 of your water bill.
And that's just the beginning of the problem. Sinks aren't designed for a slow, steady flow of water, and a leak can cause all sorts of strange things, especially if the water is so hard that the drip leaves mineral stains and deposits where it flows. This can lead to a mess that's difficult to clean, damaged seals, or even damage that warrants replacing the sink.
